– Niger Delta militants ambushed four soldiers in Bayelsa

– The militants dragged the soldiers to a location and killed them

– The army warned against the rising spate of killing of security operatives in the region

Four soldiers and one civilian have been reported dead after they were ambushed by unknown gunmen suspected to be Niger Delta militants in Bayelsa state.

The Punch reports that the attack was carried out along the waterways of Letugbene, Ekeremor local government area of the state.

Security sources also confirmed the attack and that the soldiers were coming from Letugbene community when they were attacked. It was reported that the militants seized their soldiers’ weapons and dragged them to another location before shooting them dead.

The newspaper reported that “while one of the civilians, a boat driver, allegedly escaped, the only survivor of the attack was said to have jumped into the river before he was shot by the criminals.”

Mr. Tare Porri who is chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, central zone confirmed the attack. He described it as “bizarre and unprovoked” and condemned it.

He said residents in the area said soldiers burned down houses and destroyed properties in a bid to fish out the attackers.

A security commander also confirmed the killing saying this spate of killing of security operatives had risen in the region and said this must stop.
