The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, is under investigation on suspicion of embezzlement following allegations of gross mismanagement leveled against the emirate council.
The investigation is however fuelling rumours that some Northern elites want the monarch removed after he made a series of comments about the need for social reforms, the Punch reports.
Anti-corruption investigators in Kano are looking into the accounts of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to ascertain whether the monarch mismanagement funds as alleged.
“We have gone far in the investigation… to safeguard the honour and prestige of the emirate council,” the head of the anti-corruption unit in the northern state of Kano, Muhyi Magaji, said.
As part of the investigations, Magaji said the treasurer and secretary of the state-funded royal court have been summoned for questioning on Tuesday, May 2.
PLUSILA.com learnt that a source familiar with the investigation said the probe centred on the use of six billion naira ($19 million, 17 million euros) of palace funds to pay for luxury cars, chartered flights, phone and internet bills as well as other personal expenses. However, the emirate council has denied the allegations of embezzlement leveled against his royal highness, Emir Sanusi.
“The emirate council has never bought a Rolls Royce for the emir,” treasurer Mahe Bashir Wali told reporters last Monday, April 24. Wali said the cars were given as gifts to the monarch by his friends after he became emir.
Wali maintained that the emir always bought his airline tickets with personal money and that the state government approved all his spending.
plusmilang.com recalls that the Emir had blasted conservative northern leaders who discourage attitudes and activities that, he said, would have developed the region.
Speaking at the KADINVEST 2.0, an event organised by the Kaduna Sate Government to encourage investments, Sanusi faulted the destruction of romance and love books by a former Kano governor. He also criticized the Zamfara state governor for attributing the meningitis outbreak in the state to divine circumstances.
