Meek Mill Speaks Out After Release From Prison

Following his release from prison on Tuesday (Apr. 24), Meek Mill is speaking out for the first time. During an interview with Lester Holt on “NBC Nightly News,” the Philly rapper discussed his current state of mind.

“I haven’t slept a minute since I got out of prison,” he revealed. “It’s like a culture shock coming from a small cell back into the real world, so I think my body has to adjust.”

Despite his celebrated release, Meek said he doesn’t feel free. “I don’t feel free,” he added. “I ain’t felt free since I caught this case at the age of 19. I’m 30 now. I pray. I believe God is my first lawyer. I always believed that and I got a strong team behind me…There’s a lot of light shed on my situation.”

Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, who picked Meek up from prison in a helicopter, said this is bigger than Meek Mill. “His story is so much bigger than his life,” he explained. “This is about how he can be a symbolic change agent that is needed for major criminal justice reform.”

Larry Krasner, the District Attorney of Philadelphia, also believes Meek’s original conviction may be overturned due to a corruption scandal. “There are questions about the single important witness who testified in that case,” the D.A. told Holt.
