BREAKING: Supreme Court nullifies Uhuru’s win, Kenyans to go back to ballot

– The Supreme Court has nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win.

– The final verdict was announced on Friday, August 31, by the six judges.

– The Supreme Court found that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission carried out an election marred with illegalities.

Kenya’s Supreme court has has nullified the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kenyans will now have to go back to the ballot in 60 days to elect a president and most likely between the two main challengers- Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

Raila Odinga had contested the win by President Uhuru Kenyatta following the General Election on Tuesday, August 8, alleging that that he was rigged out and that the entire exercise was compromised. In his suit, Raila named Uhuru, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and the electoral commission as respondents.

Raila Odinga had filed a similar case in 2013 but the case was thrown out on technicalities as the court confirmed Uhuru’s win.

In the latest judgement, which had the judges digest up to 70,000 pages of information, the judges said they will read the explanation later but it was clear that IEBC did not conduct the poll in the best way, legally.

In principal, the court said Uhuru Kenyatta was not validly elected as president of Kenya on August 8, 2017.

The integrity of the entire presidential election was thus affected by irregularities committed by the IEBC but Uhuru was not found to have committed any illegality in the entire process.
