Breaking: Polytechnic lecturers announce November 13 to begin strike

– The union, through its president, Usman Dutse, says the lecturers are not happy that they have been abandoned by successive governments

– He pleads with Nigerians to urge the government to meet their demands

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is to commence a nationwide industrial action beginning from November 13, 2017.

The Sun reports that the leadership of ASUP confirmed this in Abuja on Monday, November 6, after the union’s National Executive Council held an emergency meeting.

The ASUP president, Usman Dutse, said the decision of the lecturers to commence national strike follows the nonchalant manner successive administrations had treated polytechnic education in Nigeria.

“This action shall be sustained until our demands are met or an implementable memorandum of action is agreed upon by our union and relevant agencies of government,” he stated.

ASUP pleaded with Nigerians to help its members fight the government to do the needful and avoid the looming total shutdown of the education sector.

plusmilang.com reports that the decision of ASUP is coming weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced a conditional suspension of its strike action.

The ASUU president, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, announced this in Abuja after concluding the final meeting with the federal government delegation.
